Adobe® Photoshop® CS2 Read Me
This file contains last-minute product information and troubleshooting tips. Please refer to the User Guide or the How To Install document for installation instructions. If you acquired Photoshop as part of an Adobe Creative Suite, you will find the Photoshop Goodies folder on one of your Content CD's. If you acquired Photoshop as an Electronic Software Download (ESD), you will not have a CD-ROM, but the folder structure created on your hard drive after decompressing your download will contain a Goodies folder and other folders described in this document. If you purchased Photoshop CS2 through a Windows Tryout, you will receive a URL to download content not included with the Tryout on your receipt.
Certain instructions in this document may be slightly different for you, such as Serial Number information. Please refer to your Creative Suite Read Me, or the e-mail confirmation you received when you purchased the ESD version for the latest information.
Important:
Please register your copy of Photoshop online at the end of the installation process, or by accessing the Registration item under the Help menu. You can also complete the registration card and mail it today. You must register to receive technical support and important product update information.
Photoshop also requires Activation within 30 days of installation. Please reference the Activation Read Me.html file, located in the same folder as this Read Me, for more information.
Serial Numbers
You can find the 24-digit serial number (e.g. 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000) on the back cover of your CD holder. ESD customers and those who purchased from a Windows Tryout will find the serial number both on the receipt page from the online store, and in the e-mail confirmation you received. You will be asked for this number when installing Photoshop CS2.
If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Photoshop, you will need to use the new 24-digit serial number that came with your new Photoshop CS2 product. The serial number you used to install previous versions of Photoshop will not work to install Photoshop CS2.
If you are upgrading from a version of Photoshop prior to Photoshop 5.5, you will need to contact Adobe Customer Service at 800-833-6687 for installation assistance. For those outside of North America, please contact Adobe Customer Service in your region for installation assistance.
If you have purchased Photoshop CS2 and previously owned Photoshop LE, Adobe PhotoDeluxe®, or Photoshop Elements®, please use the serial number that came with your Photoshop CS2 product.
If your new 24-digit serial number does not work, please contact Adobe Customer Service at 800-833-6687 for assistance. For those outside North America, please contact Adobe Customer Service in your region for assistance.
Optional Extensions and Plug-Ins
There are several optional plug-ins and extensions included in Goodies/Optional Plug-Ins/. Included in this folder are some additional file format and export plug-ins as well as filter plug-ins.
Several extensions are also included in Goodies/Optional Plug-Ins/Photoshop Only/Optional Extensions/. These extensions let you customize and enhance the Adobe Photoshop program in a variety of ways. For more information, see the Read Me files included with the optional extensions.
Photoshop allows you to set a second plug-in folder in its preferences (Windows: Edit > Preferences > Plug-Ins and Scratch Disk or Mac OS: Photoshop > Preferences > Plug-Ins and Scratch Disk). We recommend that you do not choose a folder that contains any plug-ins from Photoshop 7.0 or earlier. You will receive error messages if you do this.
Working with Third Party Plug-Ins (Mac only)
To ensure compliance with future OSX developments, Photoshop has revamped its plug-in architecture for the Macintosh. Every effort has been made to test as many third party plug-ins as possible for compliance with Photoshop CS2; though given the breadth of the third party plug-in community, incompatibilities are still a possibility. Please contact the plug-in developer directly to request updated versions of the plug-in.
Using Adobe Photoshop with Windows®
The following sections include useful information about using Photoshop software with different versions of Windows. (Please note that Photoshop CS2 does not support Windows 3.1.x, Windows 95, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.)
Shared Files
Many files installed by Photoshop - such as TWAIN support files and MSVCRT*.* files (Microsoft runtime files) are shared with other programs. When you install or uninstall other programs that use these shared files, the file versions used by Photoshop may be overwritten or deleted. If you experience problems with features that depend on shared files, please reinstall Photoshop.
Windows 2000
Adobe Photoshop CS2 requires Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or higher.
File Associations
The Photoshop installer allows you to associate file types with either Photoshop or ImageReady. When you associate a file type with an application, you specify which application will open when a file of that type is double-clicked on the desktop or in the Windows Explorer. Windows allows all its applications to associate themselves to various file types. If you choose the defaults in the Photoshop installer, you may find that Photoshop or ImageReady will open instead of another application when you double click on certain files. The Photoshop installer allows you to turn off this association with Photoshop or ImageReady if you prefer. To do so, click on each file type you do not want to associate and, for each type, choose "Do not change". If you wish to change your file associations after installing Photoshop, please refer to the document, "How to Change File Associations in Windows" (http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/315812.html) in the Adobe Systems Technical Solutions Database on the Adobe website.
Thumbnail Icons for .psd files
Photoshop CS2 does not provide thumbnail icons of .psd files through operating system folder windows. Please use the Adobe Bridge to view your .psd thumbnail files.
Running Adobe Photoshop Over a Network
Photoshop is not designed (nor was it tested) to be run when Windows is multi-launched over a network. If you want to run Photoshop on multiple Windows systems, make sure that each system has its own copy of Windows and Photoshop installed on the hard drive.
Language Settings
If you are using the English version of Windows XP or 2000 and add Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, Korean, or Japanese language components, you must set the language correctly in the Control Panel. For Windows XP, set the Language for non-Unicode programs in the Regional and Language Options control panel Advanced tab. For Windows 2000, set the System Locale using the Regional control panel, General tab, Set default button. Both systems will then require a reboot. If the language is not set correctly, you will experience display problems with text, file I/O, and Web features.
Improving Performance and Troubleshooting
The following sections describe how to improve your system's performance when working with Photoshop and how to correct some common problems which may occur. For up to date information on optimizing Photoshop performance, refer to the document, "Optimizing Performance in Photoshop for Windows" (http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/318243.html), or "Optimizing Performance in Photoshop for Mac OS" (http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/317280.html) available online.
Fonts, Color Profiles and Application Startup Time
Upon startup, Photoshop must enumerate all of the fonts that will be available for the Type tools. If you have a large number of fonts installed on your system, this can cause Photoshop to take longer to start up. If you find the startup time for Photoshop to be too long, you should remove any unused fonts from your system. Likewise, all Color Profiles installed on the system must be read. Uninstall or remove any color profiles you will not be actively using to speed up the application startup time.
Changing the Plug-ins Folder and/or Scratch Disk at Launch Time
If you hold down the Control+Shift (Windows), Command+Shift (Mac) keys at launch time, the Additional Plug-Ins Folder dialog will appear. You can choose an additional folder from which Photoshop will load plug-ins. If you hold down the Control+Alt (Windows), Command+Option (Mac) keys at launch time the Scratch Disk Preferences dialog will appear. You can choose to change your scratch disk preferences using this dialog.
Resetting Preferences at Launch Time
If you would like to reset all of your Photoshop preferences, simultaneously hold down the Control+Alt+Shift (Windows), Command+Option+Shift (Mac) keys as you launch the application.
Adobe Save for Web Preferences
Photoshop retains its Save for Web settings in the Adobe Save for Web Prefs file. You can find it at:
Windows
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Save For Web\9.0\
Mac OS X
Library/Preferences folder in your home directory
To restore Save for Web to its default settings, quit Photoshop, rename the file or move it to the Trash, and restart Photoshop.
Working with the History Log
You can choose to save a History Log of your work in Photoshop by turning it on in the General Preferences. If you choose to save your log items to the file's Metadata, be aware that the log will not be saved with files saved in JPEG format due to a limit on the amount of text that can be saved in JPEG's File Info fields. (This limitation does not apply to files saved in the JPEG 2000 format.)
Working with Camera Raw
Camera Raw 3.0 has Auto settings. To quickly switch the Auto settings on or off, use the shortcut Control+U (Win) or Command+U (Mac). All of the Auto settings are on by default. To select which settings use Auto or not, set the Auto checkboxes as desired, then select "Save New Camera Raw Defaults" from the pop-up menu.
Accelerated Actions
The default playback option in Photoshop CS2 is now set to "Accelerated." If you'd like to see each step of an action on play-back, you can change the play-back option, found in the Action pop-up, to "Step by Step."
Compressed Drives and Virtual Memory (Windows only)
Adobe Systems recommends that you do not set either the Windows swap file or Photoshop's scratch disk to a compressed disk drive. For more information, see Assigning Scratch Disks in Chapter 1 of the User Guide.
Installing Photoshop from a Network File Server (Mac only)
The Photoshop installer uses Mac OSX Authorization Services for user authentication. This change allows the installer to install files in the proper location with the proper permissions. This new installer may not work correctly from a network file server, however.
For those users who access their Photoshop installer from a network server, the solution is to copy the installer to the local machine, or to change the permissions on the server so the group "everyone" can read the server volume in question. Contact your IS manager about making this change to your servers.
System Shortcut Key Preference (Mac only)
Due to a change with Mac OS 10.4, the shortcut F5 which used to open the Brushes palette, is now a Mac OS system shortcut that displays the spotlight search field. To use F5 to open the Brushes palette, you can turn off the shortcut in the Mac OS System Preferences.
Scripting Photoshop
Scripting Support is built into Photoshop. Scripts can be written in
Windows: Visual Basic or JavaScript
Mac: AppleScript or JavaScript
Scripts let you automate operations in Photoshop. They can range from simple manipulation of a single selected object to complex control of multiple documents. You can even create workflows across multiple applications. Check out the built-in scripts, or load your own by choosing File > Scripts in Photoshop.

Changes in ScriptUI
The ScriptUI component of ExtendScript has been updated and extended in this release, and some features are incompatible with the Photoshop CS version. In Photoshop CS, panel coordinates were measured from outside the frame (including the title bar). In Photoshop CS2, panel coordinates are measured from in the frame (the content area). This means that if you use the same values to set the vertical positions of child controls in a panel, the positions are slightly different in the two versions.
In Photoshop CS, if a ScriptUI dialog contained one or more 'edittext' control elements, keyboard focus was automatically assigned to the first-created 'edittext' field. In Photoshop CS2, the keyboard focus is not automatically assigned to any control element. The script must specify which control, if any, should have the focus by setting its 'active' property to 'true'.
Compatibility Issues
Large File Printing Limitations
Photoshop CS2 can create and open documents as large as 300,000 x 300,000 pixels. Due to various OS and printer driver limitations, Photoshop can only print documents up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels. When working with documents larger than 30,000 pixels in either direction, the Print menu item will be disabled. Text Positioning
Due to the way Photoshop CS2 text engine renders certain text blocks, opening documents created in versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS may change the position of a text block. This specifically affects text blocks with hanging carriage returns, but may affect others as well.
Graphics Card Issues
A variety of graphics card drivers may provide intermittent cursor display problems. These problems can include flickering cursors, on-screen artifacts, and cursors that don't immediately update when a new tool or cursor type is chosen. None of these display issues will affect the functionality of Photoshop. If you are experiencing any of these problems with your own graphics card, ensure that you have the latest driver for the card.
Running on Windows XP, 64-bit Gamma will not work on some video cards.
Group Naming in Actions
The default name of a layer group is now "Group 1", "Group 2", etc. instead of "Set 1", "Set 2", etc. Actions created using the previous default group naming will need to be modified to use either the new default group naming in Photoshop CS2 or to use specific group layer names.
Miscellaneous Installer Issues (Windows only)
Windows 2000 and XP do not allow certain sections of the registry to be written to by users without administrative privileges. It is recommended that only those with administrator privileges and those that are logged on as administrator install Photoshop on Windows 2000 or XP.
Printing Using LPR (Mac only)
If you are printing to a printer connected through LPR on Mac OS X, ensure the Encoding setting in the Photoshop print options is set to "ASCII."
